MBA scholarship to inspire entrepreneurs

John BigosTaking an MBA at Surrey Business School changed John Bigos’ life – he said goodbye to his career as a successful director at an architectural practice and instead used his skills to turn around a struggling business.

That business - London Duck Tours- now has an annual turnover of £4 million and John is at the helm as managing director.  The knowledge John gained on his MBA proved invaluable in restructuring the company, which carries more than 250,000 tourists around London by river and road each year.

And its knowledge John is keen to help other aspiring entrepreneurs gain through the new £5,000 London Duck Tours Entrepreneurial Scholarship for September 2013.

“If you have an MBA you look at the world from a different perspective,” he said. “It is not just about figures on a piece of paper, it is about people, marketing, strategy and finding a bespoke or unique product or service.

“I would recommend the MBA to anyone. I have ended up owning a company because I realised problem companies are a challenge for me. Others will take different things away from the programme and that is the beauty of it –a fresh perspective on your future career.”

John’s company also supports one of our Olympic hopefuls, Jonny Tye, through the London Duck Tours Sports Scholarship. Jonny, who is on the University’s High Performance Athlete Support Scheme, is a medal-winning kayaker.

The money provides him with the financial, organisational and physical support he needs to combine the demands of top-level academic and sporting endeavours.

He said: “I’d like to thank London Duck Tours for supporting me. This will help me to train to a high standard while I study and aids my chances of bringing home more medals for Team GB.”
